AHLTA (Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application) is the U.S. Department of Defense’s legacy electronic health record for the Military Health System, developed by Northrop Grumman as the prime contractor. Deployed worldwide beginning in the mid-2000s, AHLTA enabled clinicians at military treatment facilities and in deployed settings to document outpatient encounters, place orders, code diagnoses and procedures, and access a longitudinal patient record. The system integrated with the legacy Composite Health Care System (CHCS) for ancillary services and fed data to the DoD Clinical Data Repository to support enterprise reporting and population health. AHLTA also used industry standards to exchange data with other DoD and Veterans Affairs systems, helping maintain continuity of care across locations. While it expanded global access to electronic medical records, users frequently cited performance and usability challenges. The Military Health System has since transitioned to MHS GENESIS, but AHLTA remains relevant for historical records and data continuity.
